Technology Stack

Layer Technology Purpose
Core mem0ai Memory management
Vector DB Supabase (pgvector) Semantic search
Graph DB Neo4j 5.26 Relationships
LLM OpenAI API Embeddings + reasoning
REST API FastAPI HTTP interface
MCP Python MCP SDK MCP protocol
Container Docker Compose Orchestration
Docs Mintlify Documentation

Configuration

Environment Variables Required

# OpenAI
OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-...

# Supabase (existing instance)
SUPABASE_CONNECTION_STRING=postgresql://...@172.21.0.12:5432/postgres

# Neo4j
NEO4J_PASSWORD=...

# API
API_KEY=...

See .env.example for complete template.

Deployment Steps

1. Clone & Configure

cd /home/klas/mem0
cp .env.example .env
# Edit .env with your credentials

2. Apply Supabase Migration

psql "$SUPABASE_CONNECTION_STRING" -f migrations/supabase/001_init_vector_store.sql

3. Start Services

docker compose up -d

4. Verify

curl http://localhost:8080/v1/health

Next Steps - Phase 2

Ollama Integration (Future)

  • Add local LLM support
  • Configuration-driven provider switching
  • No code changes needed

Testing

  • Unit tests for API endpoints
  • Integration tests for MCP tools
  • End-to-end workflow tests

Additional Documentation

  • API endpoint examples
  • MCP integration guides
  • N8N workflow examples
  • Python client examples

Production Hardening

  • Rate limiting
  • Request validation
  • Error handling improvements
  • Monitoring dashboards
  • Backup strategies

Key Design Decisions

  1. Custom MCP Server: Built custom instead of using OpenMemory MCP to support Supabase + Neo4j
  2. Hybrid Storage: Vector + Graph + Key-Value for optimal query patterns
  3. Docker Network: All services on localai network for container-to-container communication
  4. Configuration Module: Shared config between API and MCP server
  5. Phase Approach: OpenAI first, Ollama later via config

Performance Targets (Based on mem0.ai)

  • 26% accuracy improvement over baseline OpenAI
  • 91% lower latency vs full-context approaches
  • 90% token cost savings through selective retrieval

  -d '{
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "I love pizza"}],
    "user_id": "alice"
  }'

MCP Server Test

Add to Claude Code config:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "t6-mem0": {
      "command": "python",
      "args": ["-m", "mcp_server.main"],
      "cwd": "/home/klas/mem0"
    }
  }
}

Conclusion

Phase 1 implementation is complete and ready for deployment. All core functionality is implemented:

  • REST API with full CRUD operations
  • MCP server with 7 memory tools
  • Supabase vector store setup
  • Neo4j graph integration
  • Docker orchestration
  • Comprehensive documentation

Next: Deploy, test, and iterate based on real-world usage.
